Official Patch Notes

Overview

*Note: as at launch, Morphea is not available in Tower of Salvation. Devs say they are working on fixing some bugs to make her work as expected in TOS.

Morphea is first costume in the game to create summons. Her summons effectively allow her to use two strong attacks per turn for very high damage.

Morphea is the second character in the game to have a preemptive skill (after Granhildr). Preemptive skills are very powerful for defense PVP.

Self-destruct attacks cannot be evaded.

No need to be afraid of being countered when attacking with summoned units.

Summoned units have a versatile knockback kit for repositioning enemy mobs.

High skill cost (5 SP per turn)

Tricky to control the positioning of the summons in PVP and fiend hunts, and may force you into undesirable formations

Except when activating the preemptive skill on Turn 1, summoned units cannot attack on the turn they are created.

What does Morphea actually do?

Morphea introduces a completely new skill mechanic: Allied Zone Summons. Let's break down how it works.

Where are the summoned units created?

Morphea's skill creates two summoned units. The summoned units are always created in the topmost, leftmost, position. For example, in the image below, the first summoned unit was created in the top left. Then, since Morphea was already in the next available space (top middle), the second summoned unit was created in the next available space (the top right).

What do the summoned units do?

Each of the summoned units have the exact same stats as Morphea. However, temporary buffs and debuffs applied to Morphea do not carry over to the summoned units.

The summoned units are just like normal allies: they can use a skill attack, a normal attack, or a knockback. The skill attack is a self-destruct attack, like Wiggle, and costs 0 SP. The first summoned unit (Worship) explodes in a 1x3 horizontal AOE. The second summoned unit (Slander) explodes in a 3x1 vertical AOE. The self-destruct damage increases based on Morphea's level (700% at +5).

Using the summoned units

In PVE, if you activate the "Preemptive" option on Turn 1, the summoned units will be created immediately. You can then use the summoned units just like any other allies. This includes repositioning them on the field, changing their attack order, and choosing which skill to use. If you don't want them to self-destruct (e.g. you want to keep them alive to tank enemy attacks), you can choose to normal attack or knockback, instead of using the self-destruct skill.

Note 1: other than when you use the preemptive skill on Turn 1, summoned units cannot attack on the turn that they are created. For example, if on Turn 3 you activate Morphea's skill, you will need to wait until Turn 5 before the summoned units can attack or use skills. They will not self-destruct immediately on Turn 3.

Note 2: If Morphea dies, all summons immediately die.

Note 3: If you activate Morphea's skill whilst there are already summoned units on the field, more summoned units will be created (the existing ones will not be replaced). It's possible for Morphea to create a whole army of summons!

Morphea for PVE

Morphea is a fantastic unit for general PVE battles.

First of all, offensively she is very powerful. Her summons deal a combined total of 1400% of her magic attack at +5, which is an extremely high damage multiplier. Although her M.ATK stat is on the low side (only 297), the total damage multiplier on her summon skills more than makes up for this.

Secondly, the AOE of her summons is useful for very useful for taking out mobs, especially mobs with weird formations. Having two separate attacks from her summoned units means you can target two separate clusters of enemies in one turn.

Thirdly, Morphea has a very versatile knockback toolkit. Morphea's own knockback pulls the skip position enemy towards you. Her summons have a left diagonal and right diagonal front knockback. This gives you 3 knockback options in one. In fact, it's possible to use all 3 knockbacks at the same time. No other character can do this.

Fourthly, Morphea is very useful against enemies with evasion (self-destruct attacks cannot be evaded!) and strong counter buffs (your self-destructing summons don't care if they are countered!).

Fifthly, Morphea's summons can be very helpful for tanking big enemy attacks to keep your team safe.

She is therefore excellent all-round for your PVE team.

PVE game modes

Where Morphea will shine the most is in Tower of Salvation. Her versatile knockback toolkit, her ability to deal with counter enemies, and her ability to use summons to tank enemy hits make her one of the best choices for Tower of Salvation. Sadly, devs are still working on bringing her to Tower of Salvation, so she won't be available immediately upon launch.

Morphea is also good for Tower of Pride, since her summons do large single-hit AOE attacks.

Morphea is something of a double-edged sword for fiend hunts. On one hand, her ability to deliver big damage every turn is very desirable. On the other hand, strategic unit placement is vital in some fiend hunts, and the fact that Morphea always summons from the top left may mess up your strategy or cause you to be unable to dodge a big enemy attack. Also, her SP cost upkeep is very high (5 SP per turn), which is hard to maintain in fiend hunts with low SP recharge.

Morphea in PVP

Morphea is a PVP game changer that will almost certainly make waves in the meta.

Up to the time of Morphea's release, Granhildr has been the undisputed queen of PVP defense teams. Almost every PVP defense team in high-ranking PVP runs Granhildr (either Comeback Idol or Void), which means that every attack team has to build around her existence.

Morphea now introduces a completely new kind of preemptive skill. By creating two summons, she creates two new bodies that the attacking team needs to deal with. If the attacking team targets the summons (e.g. with front attackers), this will helps keep the defender's other units safe. On the other hand, if the attacking team tries to skip over the summoned units and targets other defending units, the attacking team risks being hit with strong self-destruct attacks the next turn.

Morphea's stats are reasonably tanky. She has 2772 base HP (similar to Rou, at 2646 base HP), so she can easily reach 10k+ HP with 90% DEF or 90% M.RES. Her summons are therefore not all that easy to take out.

If Morphea picks up in the competitive PVP scene, there will be some significant changes in the meta. Here are our predictions:

  • If Morphea's popularity goes up, turtle formation attack teams (e.g. running RH.Rou) may drop in popularity, as it’s harder to tank through the additional hits from Morphea’s summons.
  • If Morphea's popularity goes up, evasion openers in attack teams (e.g. Rou, PP.Justia, Maid.Rubia) will also take a hit, since they are unable to evade the self-destruct attacks.
  • If Morphea's popularity goes up, base Teresse may emerge as an effective counter to Morphea. Morphea guarantees a crowded front row, and Teresse's cheap 1 SP skill would cause the defending team's front row summons to be knocked back with a high chance of collision damage. This would then be a strong setup for followup AOE attacks (e.g. BG Justia).

Overall, Morphea is a very welcome and refreshing addition to a PVP defense meta, that has gone somewhat stale over the last few months with Granhildr oversaturation. On launch she is likely to be an S-tier defense team costume (if for nothing else, for the surprise factor whilst everyone is still playing to counter Granhildr), but time will tell if the meta is able to adapt.

Conclusion

Morphea is a high value pull with a very unique skillset. Great for both PVP and PVE.

Since Morphea has no cooldown on her skill, she works fine with a single costume. However, our current prediction is that we will be getting another Morphea costume at the next half anniversary / new years event. This is because Morphea was the "big bad" enemy in the story for the last new years event, so there's a good chance that we'll get her as a playable character when we next return to the "dystopia" world.

Happy pulls!
