Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Act I – To the Ancient Sanctuary Walkthrough

So you've just cleared the Flying Waters area, and now you need to find your way to the Ancient Sanctuary? This guide will walk you through exactly how to get there, what you'll find along the way, and all the stuff you can pick up on your journey.

Exiting the Flying Waters

After your fight with Goblu, you'll see a cutscene that sets up your next chapter. After this cutscene, you'll come to a new area where you need to find a portal. It's pretty easy to find - just keep following the route, take a slight left, and you'll see the portal. Once you go through this portal, you'll see the "Maelle's Nightmare" cutscene, which leads to the next part of your journey.

After this scene, Maelle and Gustave have a quick talk. Near the end of the conversation, Gustave tells Maelle that if death approaches her, she should run. Once the cutscene ends, you'll be back at the camp.

After the cutscene ends, you'll notice the Curator. Just walk toward him and interact. When you interact with the Curator, he gives you two main options: "Upgrade Weapons" and "Upgrade Expedition Resources."

  • If you click "Upgrade Weapons," you can upgrade your weapons using Chroma Catalysts. Different quality weapons need different Chroma Catalysts. When a weapon gets upgraded, its attack power goes up, attribute scaling gets better, and you can unlock new passive effects at specific rarity levels.
  • If you select "Upgrade Expedition Resources," you can increase Lumina points for each character and improve Tints. Adding a Lumina point to a character costs 1 Colour of Lumina. There's no limit to how many Lumina points a character can have. For Tints, each one needs a special item and can only be improved twice.

For now, upgrade the Shape of Health to upgrade your Healing Tint. Then add a Lumina point to one of your characters. You'll get a Bronze Trophy called "Lumina" for doing this.

After upgrading, head to the campfire in the middle of camp and interact. (Note: You can even interact with Lune and Maelle for a dialogue before this, but it doesn't really matter, and you can skip if you want to.) Once you interact with the campfire, you'll get four options: "Check up on the others," "Go to sleep," "Remember the current objective," and "Write in the journal of Gustave's apprentice."

Here is what every option does :

  • Check up on the others: Starts a scene with Lune.
  • Go to sleep: Teleports you.
  • Remember the current objective: Reminds you of the current objective, which is - Find the Gestral Village in the Middle of the Ancient Sanctuary to find a way to cross the sea
  • Write in the journal of Gustave's apprentice: A scene with Gustave writing his journal.

If you pick "Check up on the others," you'll see a scene with Lune and get another Bronze Trophy called "Curious." When you're ready to continue, choose "Go to sleep." After sleeping, you'll be on the world map again.

Note: The first slide shows the dialogue with Lune, the second shows the dialogue with Maella, and the third shows you all the options after you interact with the campfire.

Finding Your Way Around

Right when you exit Flying Waters, you'll see three enemies ahead of you (A Bruler, a Luster, and a Portier). You can fight them if you want - they're pretty easy to beat. Behind them, towards the left, is the entrance to the Ancient Sanctuary. After you defeat them, you will get an upgrade for Brulerum (weapon).

If you go to the right from where you started, you'll find a Lost Gestral standing on the path. Talk to it and complete the dialogue. Right behind this Lost Gestral is the entrance portal to Esquie's Nest. Don't bother going in there yet though!

Head back to the same path and keep moving North again, and you will notice a right that leads you to a small beach. Here you'll meet Carrabi, a merchant who sells three things: Lumiere Suit Outfit for Gustave (1,000 Chroma), Lumiere Outfit for Maelle (1,000 Chroma), and a Short Haircut for Gustave (500 Chroma).

After this, get back to the same intersection you took the right from, or just start moving towards the West from Carrabi. Here you will come across a group of three enemies (A Cruler, a Lancelier, and a Demineur). Defeat these enemies to get Lanceram and Cruleram weapon upgrades. In the same place you will also find a Colour of Lumina.

After finding the Colour of Lumina, start moving west again till you see a rock-like enemy with a red pattern and a huge hammer. This boss is called Chromatic Bruler, and he is quite tough, so be sure you are well prepared before diving into this battle. Chromatic Bruler is weak against the Fire Element. Once you defeat it, you will get the following rewards: Powerful Revive, Colour of Lumina x5, Polished Chroma Catalyst x2 and 3,113 Chroma XP. Chromatic Bruler is an optional boss, and in the small camp behind him, you can find 1,775 Chroma and Colour of Lumina.

Now let's check out the left path in front of the Ancient Sanctuary. As you walk down this path, you'll find a panel you can use to create a shortcut bridge. Close to The Small Burgeon, you'll meet more enemies - a Lancelier, an Abbest, and a Luster. Beat them for weapon upgrades to Lighterim and Lanceram. There are several other portals in this area:

While exploring (at this stage), you can find several weapon upgrades by defeating specific groups of enemies:

  • Right when you exit Flying Waters, you'll find a group of enemies (a Bruler, a Luster, and a Portier). Defeat them to get a weapon upgrade for Brulerum.
  • On the left path in front of the Ancient Sanctuary is a group of enemies (a Lancelier, an Abbest, and a Luster). Defeating this group will reward you with weapon upgrades for Lighterim and Lanceram.
  • To the right of the Ancient Sanctuary, you can fight a group of enemies (a Cruler, a Lancelier, and a Demineur). Defeat them to get weapon upgrades for Lanceram and Cruleram.

How to Reach the Ancient Sanctuary

Now that you've explored the area and picked up all the good stuff, head to the entrance of the Ancient Sanctuary in the large collection of red trees northwest of your starting position.

The entrance is pretty easy to find - just look for the portal between the red trees. Once you find it, just walk through to continue your adventure into the Ancient Sanctuary.
