Getting into Destiny can be incredibly daunting, especially with its massive emphasis on teamplay in the endgame. And, if you’re looking to get into it alone, it can be terrifying to face the world of Destiny by yourself. But the world of Destiny is full of like-minded players and a lot of kind souls.
Even still, connecting with those new players can be scary, and knowing even where to look might feel overwhelming. Even as an experienced player, the idea of playing with random people can be exhausting, especially with how some players can act towards those who are newer.
That’s why in this guide, I’m going to help you work out exactly how to use Destiny 2 LFG to find a team to help you get your first Raid and Dungeon clears. With this, you’ll be able to find players and also hopefully befriend some of them, so you can have some pals to traverse the world of Destiny with.
What is LFG?
Looking for Game (or LFG) is a phrase that someone puts when they’re looking for teammates to play a mode with. But, in this context, LFG is a server or community that is made for the purpose of helping connect players so they can complete activities together.
Ultimately, if you’re looking for players to join an activity with you, some form of LFG will be your first port of call if you don’t already have a group yourself. Usually, you’ll post the activity you want to complete and your username in chat, and people will join in with you so you can complete the activity.
There is a slight issue here, though. Generally, people who join a random LFG post are expected to know what to do (KWTD), which, as a new player, isn’t really suitable. But, there are specific types of runs that solve this, that you should keep an eye out for.
What is a Sherpa Run?
A Sherpa run, or a Teaching run, is exactly that — a guide will take new players through an activity and teach them how to complete it. It’s designed to help newer players get to grips with certain activities. The term ‘Sherpa’ refers to the Sherpa people of Nepal and Tibet (who assist and guide mountaineers in their journeys through the rocky region) and so people who offer a Sherpa run will generally be welcoming to any skill level whatsoever.
Sherpa runs are great for new players — I got started raiding with a random Sherpa Vault of Glass run, and it gave me the confidence to get into raiding more and more. It’s a place where you can learn, get used to the environment, and hopefully make some friends!
Where do I find LFGs/Sherpa Runs?
Fireteam Finder
Fireteam Finder is built into the game itself and gives you a way to find players without having to log onto another platform. It’s a pretty great way of finding runs, but it is incredibly limited in its capabilities.
First of all, you have to use the pre-made post captions, meaning that sometimes it can be difficult to write down exactly what you need to put. Secondly, using Fireteam Finder restricts you to in-game chat, which might be great for you if it works for you, but it doesn’t exactly work for everyone.
So, while Fireteam Finder can sometimes be great, it can also be very limited and might not be the best place to find what you’re looking for.
Discord Servers
Discord is the main place where most people play Destiny 2 with others. It has a range of LFG and Sherpa servers, and has better functionality than the in-game options available. It’s also better at helping you build connections and ultimately stay in touch with a group that you might want to play with in the future.
LFG Servers
Here is a list of commonly used LFG servers (none of these are an endorsement, just popular LFG servers):
- Destiny 2 LFG (aka White Server): https://discord.gg/d2lfg
- Destiny 2 LFG (aka Red Server): https://discord.gg/destiny2lfg
- Destiny 2 Server (not an LFG but has LFG channels): https://discord.gg/d2
In the two LFG servers, there’s a channel for every Raid, and channels for every other activity. All you need to do is keep an eye out for a Sherpa in the chat for the activity you’d like to do, or you can ask in the chat for a Sherpa, and someone will reach out.
In the White LFG Server, there’s also a #looking-for-sherpa chat, which you can use to specifically seek a Sherpa, making it easier to find one. Just reach out in there and see if you can find one.
Sherpa Servers
Sometimes, Sherpas will have their servers for their own groups that they’ll invite you to, and this is a great way to find a more solid group to raid with. The issue with LFG servers is that it’s hard to find players that you can play with regularly, and so a closer-knit community is better for that if you want a more solid group.
DotGG Discord Server
We have our own Discord server, with a Destiny 2 chat! Join and let us know if you want to do an activity, as I’ll always be down to Sherpa a Raid or Dungeon with new endgame players. Make sure you grab the Destiny 2 role as you join to access the Destiny 2 channel!
There’s also a Sherpa subreddit, r/DestinySherpa, where players will post their own Sherpas that you can join.
These will be organised to a certain time usually, and so if you need to plan around a specific timeframe, this is a great place. Some Sherpas will have more requirements here, though, so be aware of that.
Tips for LFGing
LFGing can be very scary if you’ve never stepped foot into that kind of community before, so here are some tips so you can have a positive experience!
- Negative People: In the world of LFG, you are going to come across people who make the experience fun. So, if you end up in a situation where you’re with people who aren’t great, don’t feel pressured to stay around them. It’s better to leave and save your own emotional energy than deal with bad people.
- LFG Posts: When making posts, make sure to be clear about what you want to be doing in an activity. If you need help from a certain encounter, post that encounter. If you want to farm, put that in your post. Being as clear as possible will help like-minded people find your post. Also, remember to set your fireteam to public, so people can join you.
- Three-Player Activities: If you make an LF post for a three-player activity, like a Dungeon or Grandmaster Nightfall, hop into The Enclave to avoid more than three people joining your game.
Eventually, as you LFG, you’ll find people you click with and want to play with again. This is how you find like-minded people and end up forming groups to raid with over and over!
