Blizzard have officially announced that Diablo 4 is now their fastest-selling game of all time. However, the company didn’t provide any concrete Diablo 4 sales numbers.
The only stat available publicly as of now is that the game has already been played for 93 million hours since its Early Access launch on June 1.
Diablo 4 Sales Beat the WoW Record
This is a moment years in the making for the Diablo 4 team. We’re extremely proud to offer players the richest story ever told in a Diablo game.
Since the game was first announced in 2019, the support from millions of players around the world drove us toward this release of our dark vision of Sanctuary. Hail Lilith, Blessed Mother.
Rod Fergusson, Diablo Franchise General Manager
The previous record holder for the best-selling Blizzard game was the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands expansion with 3.7 million copies sold on launch day. However, Diablo 4 sales numbers are favorably boosted by the fact that it was released on multiple platforms - PC and consoles.
In addition it is worth noting that Diablo 4 has been out for four days before its official release on June 6. Blizzard is presumably counting sales from early access in addition to day-one purchases.
Developer Launch Message
Given Diablo 4 sales numbers after day 1, it's clear that the launch of Diablo 4 has been a rousing success.
Franchise General Manager Rod Fergusson and Game Director Joe Shely have released a launch statement. In the video below, they discuss the 'Play Your Way' design of the game and thank players for their support. They also want to let us know that things are just heating up!
Diablo IV offers so much more for players to do than ever before.
The game was built with player choice in mind, allowing you to play the way you want to play - whether that's diving into the massive story, exploring dungeons, or just roaming the open world, slaying any demon that comes your way.
I'm most interested in seeing all the different builds players create.
Joe Shely, Diablo 4 Game Director
I can't wait for players to experience the final showdown between Lilith and Inarius.
It's been thousands of years in the making and is going to be truly epic.
Rod Fergusson, Diablo Franchise General Manager
Diablo 4 has received very positive reviews from the media outlets so far, boasting an 87 out 100 score on Metacritic. For example, Windows Central wrote: "Diablo 4 might be Blizzard's most important, pivotal game since World of Warcraft. Do yourself a favor and go in completely blind. Even if you're not a typical fan of isometric action RPGs, I'm confident that you won't be disappointed."
The marketing campign for the game has also been stellar. Blizzard is backing the release with several promotions, including the Twitch Drops campaign, the ‘Lilith’ music video by Halsey ft. SUGA, as well as a collaboration with Hollywood sex symbol Megan Fox.
