Diablo 4 features a huge open-world map with a deep exploration experience. Your horse mount will be your trusty companion throughout - however it is not immediately obvious how to get a mount in Diablo 4.
Your horse isn't yet available for pickup when you first arrive in the main city of Kyovashad. You’ll need to level up and do some questing before the game allows you to have a driving license.
In this FAQ, you'll learn how to unlock the mount quest, how to complete it, and how you can customize your horse.
How to Get a Mount Quest in Diablo 4
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to unlock the horse mount in Diablo 4 until the beginning of Act IV.
When you first arrive in Kyovashad after the prologue and the tutorial, you’ll acquire three quests: Act I, Act II, and Act III. You can tackle these quests in any order, but you have to complete all three act quests before you can move on to Act IV.
At the very start of Act IV, you’ll be back in the starting city Kyovashad. Complete the "Master’s Touch" quest and, after that you'll receive the "Mount: Donan’s Favor" quest, which is exactly how you get a mount in Diablo 4.
Now that you have the quest, all you need to do now is speak to the stable master in Kyovashad. You’ll get a popup alerting you to how the mount system works and you’ll get to pick your horse color.
On average you'll be level 30 at this point in the campaign, but it may vary based on what difficulty you’re playing on and how much side content you do.
Tip: consider ignoring side content until you get your horse, as moving from place to place gets significantly faster once you’re on a mount.
Mounts and Customization
The horse provides a great boost to your exploration speed and quality-of-life. It has its own energy system - you can kick it to making it go faster ('Space' is a default keybind on PC), with up to three charges.
While charging, you become Unstoppable so you shake off the crowd control and can ride straight through packs of monsters. It’s a good idea to always keep one of your charges up in case you get swarmed by enemies.
If you do take some damage while horseback, a meter will fill up on the UI. At max meter, you’ll get kicked off and won’t be able to jump back on for a while.
At the stable, you can change the horse’s appearance and buy new visual appearance options. Upgrades do not change the actual functionality of the horse and are purely cosmetic.
Currently, there are several ways to earn cosmetics for your mount. You can purchase them in the Shop, earn them as a part of Twitch promotion, or fight in Legion or World Boss events to get them for as a reward.
