Developer Update: Squid Blades Now Jaded Blades, Slugfest Event, and More

mo.co's Community Manager Joao has provided further updates to the Squid Blades rework, Slugfest, and a tease on what's upcoming for the game. Check out the full announcement below!

SQUID JADED BLADES πŸ¦‘ πŸ’§ (this is the squid crying)

As you may know, we are reworking this weapon.

  • No longer has invisibility
  • Using your weapon, gadgets or taking damage no longer stops the bar from filling, making it easier to use the ambush (even in the middle of battle)
  • You now always ambush in your facing direction picking an enemy inside a 60 degree cone to dash to (you can use this mechanic to also quickly exit a fight)
  • Dash range is reduced from 7 tiles to 6 tiles
  • DPS is higher

You can watch below the weapon in action

The biggest question that has been popping out: why did we remove its invisibility?

The Cause: weapon gives too much of an advantage in a few rifts and dojos.

The Problem:

  • certain Rifts (when all players combined) and Dojos that should be very hard are being completed quite easily.
  • Squid Blades is disrupting the matchmaking for everyone whenever there's a non-squid players, while also affecting comp diversity.

We've read a few suggestions, namely to rework Rifts. For example:

  • Make it so that some monsters/bosses are immune to invisibility
  • Add a gate so players need to destroy monsters before facing bosses

So, why didn't we reworked Rifts instead?

  • Reworking the whole Rifts mechanics to serve one weapon wasn't the most efficient way nor would completely solve the problem.
  • It's a weapon that, by design, only fully works on Rifts if everyone uses it, thus potentially prevailing the same matchmaking problems.
  • Reworking Rifts would require a lengthier development for something that needed quick action
  • We still considered having all-seeing monsters on Rifts, but that would just not be consistent and would just add a layer of complexity within the game. If a weapon is set to be invisible, then ideally it should be all across the game.

While we can always improve Rifts as a game mode, the problem in case was mostly a weapon design issue, therefore, that's where we needed to quickly act.

How will I complete certain 2 min rifts? It will be impossible!
Probably not impossible, but yes, very hard - as originally intended. If you're struggling with those, you may note that

  1. grinding/upgrading your smart rings may be needed
  2. pair with friends instead of randos may be needed for better chances (and you're already on the perfect platform for that)

If those don't work, then maybe… the answer is somewhere in one of your titles 🀭 (talking about your teammates, not you ofc)

Jokes aside, this is something we'll keep monitoring. if absolutely no one is completing certain rifts, we can always balance them.

I know some of you will miss the invisibility (yes, it was a cool feature) and disagree with the decision, but we also hope you are happy with the redesign (isn't ambush quite cool as well?) and understand our decision.

The change should be effective early next week.

SLUGFEST

Never was super fond of that expression often used; "we heard you", sometimes followed by "loud and clear" πŸ˜… There's something about it, isn't it?

With that being said… 😼 😼 😼
WE HEARD YOU! LOUD AND CLEAR! πŸ“’ πŸ“’ πŸ“’

So… Slugfest.

βœ… Luck based and not really a fun experience - noted!
βœ… The brown belt ELO was a nightmare - noted! (this was actually a bug, sorry πŸ™ )
βœ… There are still several improvements needed for PvP - noted! (we've been literally taking notes)

So what's next for temporary events? We are…

βœ… Leaning more on PvE (for the next five events, only one will be PvP)
βœ… Doubling down on events (two per week, starting next week!)

We still want to throw some PvP events, not only because we still have a few players who enjoy those, but also because we want to keep trying new things and see what resonates better with you. Rest assured, we'll make them way less grindy πŸ™

Oh, and I almost forgot! For this weekend event you'll be able to…

TEST

A NEW

W

sorry my keyboard ran out of battery.

right, where was I?
Yes, so more events, more PvE coming, less PvP

A FINAL NOTE

With almost a month after launch, we are now taking reflections and looking ahead! We will reach again in the next few days to update you on:

βœ… Where we are
βœ… What's next for us
βœ… Letting you know what are we working on
βœ… Make you some questions
βœ… Perhaps share with you a couple of cool stuff

All we can say for now is that - we are very excited for what lies ahead ✨

Thank you for sticking with us
Hugs and ladybugs,
