Best Characters Tier List

Sword of Convallaria has a plethora of characters who fill many different roles and do many different things in battle. Since, however, you can only bring 5 or 6 characters to any given battle, and since the resources you receive in-game are not endless, it can be very helpful to know which characters will generally work the best and provide the best return on investment. It is my goal with this Character Tier List to give an overview of which characters will give you the most "bang for your buck", as it were, and help you to prioritize where you should channel your resources.

Tier List Info

Before we jump in to ranking the characters into different tiers, there is some information that I would like to go over, first. First of all, I am of the opinion that attempting to directly compare DPS characters (those who are focused on doing damage) to Support characters (those who are focused on buffing and/or healing their teammates, etc.) is bad practice, so each tier will be broken into a "DPS" section and a "Support" section, to allow for more meaningful comparisons.

Secondly, in order to keep the tier list from becoming cluttered by characters who fill both roles appearing twice, I placed those characters on the side of the tier list where they would be ranked more favorably.

Lastly, I just want to go over my definitions for what each tier of the tier list represents on a practical level:

  • S Tier: The cutting edge of the meta. These characters should/will often comprise the core of your best team compositions and will often work better with less investment than other characters who fill similar roles. Oftentimes, these characters also compress several roles into one (particularly on the Support side), or get multiple actions per turn (particularly on the DPS side), or just do so much damage that they easily justify their place in this tier.
  • A Tier: These characters perform very well within their respective roles and are almost always solid choices to bring to any given battle, but are just slightly outclassed by those characters in S Tier.
  • B Tier: These characters can be good, and some of them do have their niches, but they are often one-trick ponies (they only do one thing well), or they just can't put out the damage that the characters in higher tiers can, or they require so much investment to get them to a point that is good, but still outclassed by better characters, that it simply isn't worth the time or resources (looking at you, Caris).
  • C Tier: These characters arenโ€™t necessarily awful or anything, but just keep in mind that these characters tend to struggle to perform, particularly in late-game content. That's not to say that you cannot use them, even in the endgame, but very rarely are they going to be the best option in those circumstances.

With all of that being said, I do want to make a comment here that you can (and in most cases, should) bring a team comprised of your favorite characters to most content in this game. It is my opinion that most players will derive far more enjoyment out of using their favorite characters than they will out of throwing 5 or 6 S Tier characters on a team (unless they're your favorites because they're so strong!), and this is a game, meant to be enjoyed. Pull for whom you like, and use the characters you love, and I believe you will have a much better experience than if you try to conform yourself to the whims of the ever-evolving meta.

And now, without any further ado, I present my SoC Character Tier List:

Character Ranking Explanations

In this section, I want to provide explanations for the S Tier and the A Tier characters and why they are so highly ranked. For the lower rank characters, I do not feel this is overly necessary. If you require more details about any of the characters, however, you can click on their name in the actual tier list and it will take you to the guide I've made for that character.

S Tier - DPS

Agata Agata

Agata has a very versatile kit, with skills that do both physical and piercing damage. Additionally, she has a healthy mix of both single-target and AoE attack skills, meaning she almost always has the right tool for any job. As if that wasn't enough, she boasts high mobility, multiple debuffs, and great NRG efficiency, meaning her skills are easy to activate. Her big single-target nuke also heals herself and nearby allies.

Auguste Auguste

Auguste is an absolute powerhouse of a character. His [Rage] mechanic enables him to take multiple actions per turn on the turn it activates, and his attacks all hit very hard. Overall, he's a very "unga-bunga" character, but it works well; he pretty much deletes anything that has the nerve to stand anywhere near him, whether in single-target or AoE situations. Really takes off once you get him to 4-star.

Kvare Kvare

Because almost all of Kvare's attacks deal piercing damage, rather than physical or magical damage, he has the ability to cut through enemy defenses and wipe out massive swathes of foes with his ultimate, [This is the Moment for Rain]. Because his piercing damage scales off of his M.ATK stat, it doesn't get reduced like most other piercing damage does by bosses, meaning that he is useful in almost all scenarios.

Luvata

Luvata is a powerful AoE mage who loves to play with fire. Her skills allow her to reliably fire off large AoE skills that both inflict magical damage and piercing damage on the enemies they hit. Her focus on critical hits also means that her already strong attacks will do significantly more damage. She also pairs wonderfully with Kvare, due to her piercing damage effects. She has wonderful NRG management ability, which means she is useful pretty much every turn.

Safiyyah Safiyyah

Safiyyah is a highly versatile character. While her damage output can be nerfed by certain bosses' immunities to percent-based damage, she makes up for this by having access to the ability to summon [H.M. Agents] to the battlefield, who can swap places with any ally, the ability to (for one turn) dodge and counterattack as many single-target attacks as are thrown at her, and change her class to that of any nearby ally or enemy for a turn. Seriously, she makes herself useful in almost any battle.

SP Rawiyah SP Rawiyah

The AoE princess. With the ability to launch multiple AoEs per turn, she provides excellent action economy and respectable damage against multiple foes. Her high mobility as a Seeker allows her to position herself in just the right place to cause as much havoc as possible, and her access to [Fancy Footwork] gives her situational use as a dodge tank. As icing on the cake, she can also knock back enemies with her basic attacks and her reaction skill heals her to full health and gives her access to [Resolve] every time an ally (including a summon) dies, making her very difficult to kill under the right circumstances.

Tristan Tristan

If Auguste excels at doing big damage over a long period of time, Tristan excels and killing everything around her within a two or three turn period. The biggest caveat when using Tristan is that, outside of her [Berserk] state, she's an okay DPS, but is not powerful enough to stand toe-to-toe with some of the others on this list, but when she enters her [Berserk] state, she becomes unkillable for a few turns and her offensive capabilities skyrocket. As such, make sure you time her [Berserk] well for maximum effect. She works well as an AoE attacker, but real Tristan aficionados know that her real potential is found in being a speedy boss killer, as long as she's built correctly. In other words, like most of the others in S Tier, she works well in almost any scenario. Just be aware that longer battles are not her forte.

S Tier - Support

Cocoa Cocoa

Cocoa is kind of a jack of all trades; she heals, tanks, and buffs, as well as has access to piercing damage and debuffs. As such, she is a staple on many teams. She really starts to shine when she reaches 5-star, however, as she gains reliable access to her [Happiness] buff, which allows her and her allies to have reduced skill CDs and NRG rebates, which gives your other allies much better skill uptime.

Homa Homa

Homa is the ultimate offensive support character, even to the point where she can be considered something of a DPS herself. Her biggest two support options are her ability to provide [Hovering Support] to an ally, which provides them with offensive and movement buffs, and also her [Barul Attack], which does big damage to a single target, and inflicts a huge P.DEF debuff on that target, as well as inflicts [Blind] and a strong AoE attack on any enemies within 2 tiles of the ally with [Hovering Support]'s effect currently on them. She is an absolute mainstay on any physical team. Oh, and she has access to healing skills in a pinch, as well.

SP Safiyyah SP Safiyyah

Similar to Homa in that she blurs the line between a DPS and Support, SP Safiyyah's entire kit is focused around causing her allies to launch Assisting Attacks on enemies. She has a skill that moves an ally of your choice up to 5 spaces, and her passive does a great job of keeping your team healed. Her basic attack and ult both cause allies to launch Assisting Attacks, which can quickly overwhelm most enemy targets. As she targets allies with her skills, she also provides numerous buffs, meaning that your overall damage output, etc. will increase drastically with her on the team.

Taair Taair

Taair is a support character who is more focused around NRG efficiency and SPD manipulation than around healing (although he does have the ability to heal with all of his skills, the heals are not as potent as other supports). His [Seed of Wisdom] skill provides an extra 100 SPD and a buff that restores 1 NRG to all allies within two tiles of the target ally, while [Caged Reverie] allows your allies near Taair share any damage taken, while also increasing their damage output, meaning your team becomes much more powerful fora few turns. As if that wasin't enough, he can also restore NRG in an AoE with an [Instant] skill, [Inner Light] every few turns. With Taair on the team, you won't have to worry about not having enough NRG to use your team's skills.

A Tier - DPS

Layla Layla

Layla's main form of dealing damage is through off-turn [Alert] attacks, which are set up by using her ultimate skill, [Cloud Slash]. Any enemy who then runs though her [Alert] field had better be ready to receive multiple attacks and take some serious damage. The main reasons she misses out on SS Tier is because she is much less useful against bosses than she is against mobs, and because once her Alert attacks are used up for the turn, she becomes a sitting duck, so make sure you do your best to position her wisely when using her ultimate. Also, keeping her [Alert] up can be very expensive, NRG-wise.

Momo Momo

Momo has many of the same traits as Layla, since she is also an [Alert]-based DPS. Once she uses her [Doom Waken] skill, she becomes the center of a giant [Alert] field, which shreds enemies whenever they walk into it (or even activate a skill in it, if she has a Hunter's Intuition trinket). This can activate up to 3 times per turn, so make sure you aren't asking her to do more than she can handle before her action on the following turn. The nice thing is that her [Alert] field stays active for a few turns, meaning it's much less NRG-intensive than Layla's is, though it activates fewer times per turn. Great against mobs, but she usually gets benched against bosses.

Pamina Pamina

If you're facing waves of enemies and you need someone to withstand an onslaught, while also destroying multiple enemies as she crash upon your walls... Pamina is your gal. She excels in big groups of enemies, and is in her element when she's surrounded. She actually heals herself as she's countering her enemies' attacks, meaning she stays healthy while the enemy dies. She can work okay in bossing scenarios, but usually there's a better option. One of her big downsides is that she really needs her Astral Imprint (her signature weapon, if you will) to function at full capacity, or else her ultimate's CD becomes very prohibitive.

A Tier - Support

Gloria Gloria

There was a time where Gloria was THE support/dps combo in the game, and, while she does still work very well in both categories, in a lot of cases, she's been outclassed. That being said, if you happen to have her at 5-star, she still works very well as a DPS (both single-target and AoE), and definitely warrants usage as one. Let me be clear, however, if you pull Gloria, you've pulled an excellent character, and she can easily be slotted on to most teams. The biggest issue she faces these days in her support role is that the S Tier supports simply do what she does, and they do it better than she can, meaning it can be tough to justify bringing her over them in a lot of cases.

Inanna Inanna

Inanna's biggest reason for being A Tier is her ability to provide another action to an ally of your choice every few turns. Most of the rest of her kit is heavily outclassed by other support characters on this list, and her heals can be somewhat frustrating to use, since they're centered on her, not on another target, meaning she has to enter the fray to be healing her allies. However, in certain situations, her ability to provide bonus actions to allies is invaluable, and since she's the only character in the game who can currently provide this boon, it means she is uniquely useful in certain circumstances. Her [Co-Attack] and [Co-Defense] buffs are also very helpful in in content like Weaponry Trials and other battles where enemies do lots of damage and/or have lots of HP.

NonoWill NonoWill

NonoWill (for the time being) is the only character in the game who can inflict [Vulnerable III] on enemies, and she also has access to the Aggression leader aura, which at least a few of the best DPS characters benefit from. As such, she is invaluable for quickly killing bosses. She can also be built for inflicting lots of [Infection] stacks on enemies, but her best use is as a support for dedicated DPSs to do as much damage as possible in as short a time as possible.

Conclusions

I want to reiterate here that if you really love a character's design or playstyle, you can really make that character work for almost all content in the game, so you shouldn't let this (or any other) tier list stop you from using and/or investing in your favorites. I invite you to check out my suggested builds for all of the characters on this list and I really do hope this has been helpful to you, whether you're a new player with absolutely no idea what any characters do, or a grizzled veteran who is just stopping by to see what that Garbelius guy thinks of your favorite character(s).
