Genshin Impact: Yelan Quick Character Build

Yelan is a Hydro DPS character that combines rapid attacks with agile mobility. She can move rapidly using her Lifeline, latching onto and mark opponents along the path. This will deal Hydro DMG to marked targets and has a fixed chance to reset her Breakthrough state, which will buff her next Charged Shot. Her Elemental Burst will create the Exquisite Throw to assist your active character in combat to deal constant Hydro DMG.

This guide is based on the Community Character Builds by the Genshin Helper Team.

Skills Overview

Normal Attack: Stealthy Bowshot

Normal Attack
Performs up to 4 consecutive shots with a bow.

Charged Attack
Perform a more precise Aimed Shot with increased DMG.
While aiming, flowing water will accumulate on the arrowhead. A fully charged torrential arrow will deal Hydro DMG.

Plunging Attack
Fires off a shower of arrows in mid-air before falling and striking the ground, dealing AoE DMG upon impact.

Her bangle starts glowing
Breakthrough is like an upgrade for her Charged Aim Shot

Breakthrough
Yelan will enter a "Breakthrough" state after spending 5s out of combat, which will cause her next Charged Aimed Shot to have 80% decreased charge time, and once charged, she can fire a "Breakthrough Barb" that will deal AoE Hydro DMG based on Yelan's Max HP.

Elemental Skill: Lingering Lifeline

Fires off a Lifeline that allows her to move rapidly, entangling and marking opponents along its path.
When this rapid movement ends, the Lifeline will explode, dealing Hydro DMG to the marked opponents based on Yelan's Max HP.

Tap
Moves a certain distance forward swiftly.

Hold
Engages in continuous, swift movement, during which Yelan's resistance to interruption is increased.
During this time, Yelan can control this rapid movement and end it by using this Skill again.

Additionally, each opponent marked by the Lifeline when it explodes grants Yelan a 34% chance to reset her Breakthrough state.

Max Duration (Hold): 3 seconds
CD: 10 seconds

Elemental Burst: Depth-Clarion Dice

Deals AoE Hydro DMG and creates an "Exquisite Throw," which aids her in battle.

Exquisite Throw
Follows the character around and will initiate a coordinated attack under the following circumstances, dealing Hydro DMG based on Yelan's Max HP:
- Can occur once every second when your active character uses a Normal Attack.
- Will occur each time Yelan's Lifeline explodes and hits opponents.

Ascension 1: Turn Control

When the party has 1/2/3/4 Elemental Types, Yelan's Max HP is increased by 6%/12%/18%/30%.

Ascension 4: Adapt With Ease

So long as an Exquisite Throw is in play, your own active character deals 1% more DMG. This increases by a further 3.5% DMG every second. The maximum increase to DMG dealt is 50%.
The pre-existing effect will be dispelled if Depth-Clarion Dice is recast during its duration.

Passive Talent: Necessary Calculation

Gains 25% more rewards when dispatched on a Liyue Expedition for 20 hours.

TLDR / Rotation

Yelan is the 5-star Xingqiu with some pros and cons. But the mechanic is almost the same as the 4-star bookworm.
Use Skill (once or twice depending on your weapon) to recharge Energy > Use Burst when its available > Switch to other characters for reactions.

The left column represents Yelan’s number of Skill uses in the rotation and the top row represents weapons or teammates that reduce Yelan’s Energy requirements.

First of all, let me say that you need to emphasize Energy Recharge when building Yelan because she relies on her Burst all the time to provide support for the team.
To do that, her artifact / weapon / teammates play such an important role unless you have C1 Yelan. Please refer to the table above by Keqingmains to see how much Energy Yelan needs and how many Skills she needs to do in one rotation to get enough Energy for her Burst.

Talent Priorities

Burst > Skill > Normal Attack*

Yelan is an off-field DPS who is able to apply Hydro via her Elemental Burst, this part of her kit acts similarly to Xingqiu's Elemental Burst. Yelan mainly scales off HP%, so don't build her with ATK%. Yelan also wants a lot of Energy Recharge to be able to maintain her Elemental Burst uptime, this can decrease depending on the number of Hydro units or energy providers in the team.

*Regarding the Normal Attack, only level it up if you want to constantly use her Breakthrough state.

Constellations

Best Constellations: C1, C2 & C6

C1: Enter the Plotters ⭐
Lingering Lifeline gains 1 additional charge.

C2: Taking All Comers ⭐
When Exquisite Throw conducts a coordinated attack, it will fire an additional water arrow that will deal 14% of Yelan's Max HP as Hydro DMG.
This effect can trigger once every 1.8s.

C3: Beware the Trickster's Dice
Increases the Level of Depth-Clarion Dice by 3.
Maximum upgrade level is 15.

C4: Bait-and-Switch
Increases all party members' Max HP by 10% for 25s for every opponent marked by Lifeline when the Lifeline explodes. A maximum increase of 40% Max HP can be attained in this manner.

C5: Dealer's Sleight
Increases the Level of Lingering Lifeline by 3.
Maximum upgrade level is 15.

C6: Winner Takes All ⭐
After using Depth-Clarion Dice, Yelan will enter the Mastermind state.
In this state, all of Yelan's Normal Attacks will be special Breakthrough Barbs. These Breakthrough Barbs will have similar abilities to normal ones and the DMG dealt will be considered Charged Attack DMG, dealing 156% of a normal Breakthrough Barb's DMG.
The Mastermind state lasts 20s and will be cleared after Yelan fires 5 arrows.

  5. Fading Twilight (4⭐) [R5]
  6. Recurve Bow (3⭐)

1) Elegy for the End (ATK: 608 • Energy Recharge: 55.1%)

A part of the "Millennial Movement" that wanders amidst the winds.
Increases Elemental Mastery by 60~120.
When the Elemental Skills or Elemental Bursts of the character wielding this weapon hit opponents, that character gains a Sigil of Remembrance. This effect can be triggered once every 0.2s and can be triggered even if said character is not on the field.
When you possess 4 Sigils of Remembrance, all of them will be consumed and all nearby party members will obtain the "Millennial Movement: Farewell Song" effect for 12s.
"Millennial Movement: Farewell Song" increases Elemental Mastery by 100~200 and increases ATK by 20~40%. Once this effect is triggered, you will not gain Sigils of Remembrance for 20s.
Of the many effects of the "Millennial Movement," buffs of the same type will not stack.
Note: This weapon is to be used only in reaction based comps such as Vape Hu Tao, Yelan's personal damage is lower than other options on this list, but is more beneficial for the team's damage per rotation.

2) Favonius Warbow (ATK: 454 • Energy Recharge: 61.3%)

CRIT hits have a 60~100% chance to generate a small amount of Elemental Particles, which will regenerate 6 Energy for the character. Can only occur once every 12~6s.

3) Aqua Simulacra (ATK: 542 • CRIT DMG: 88.2%)

HP is increased by 16~32%. When there are opponents nearby, the DMG dealt by the wielder of this weapon is increased by 20~40%. This will take effect whether the character is on-field or not.
Note: Can still perform well at high Energy Recharge as long as your minimum Energy Recharge requirements are met.

4) Sacrificial Bow (ATK: 565 • Energy Recharge: 30.6%)

After dealing damage to an opponent with an Elemental Skill, the skill has a 40~80% chance to end its own CD. Can only occur once every 30~16s.
Note: This ideally needs to be at refinement [R3-R5] to function properly in most Yelan teams rotations without desyncing the rotation and extending her field time.

5) Silvershower Heartstrings (ATK: 542 • HP: 66.2%)

The equipping character can gain the Remedy effect. When they possess 1/2/3 Remedy stacks, Max HP will increase by 12%/24%/40%~24%/48%/80%. 1 stack may be gained when the following conditions are met: 1 stack for 25s when using an Elemental Skill; 1 stack for 25s when the value of a Bond of Life value increases; 1 stack for 20s for performing healing. Stacks can still be triggered when the equipping character is not on the field. Each stack's duration is counted independently. In addition, when 3 stacks are active, Elemental Burst CRIT Rate will be increased by 28%~56%. This effect will be canceled 4s after falling under 3 stacks.

6) Mouun's Moon (ATK: 565 • ATK 27.6%)

For every point of the entire party's combined maximum Energy capacity, the Elemental Burst DMG of the character equipping this weapon is increased by 0.12~0.24%. A maximum of 40~80% increased Elemental Burst DMG can be achieved this way.
Note: This weapon works best at [R3+] and makes HP% Goblet potentially a stronger option instead of Hydro Bonus especially in comps with strong DMG% buffs.

7) Hunter's Path (ATK: 542 • CRIT Rate: 44.1%)

Gain 12~24% All Elemental DMG Bonus. Obtain the Tireless Hunt effect after hitting an opponent with a Charged Attack. This effect increases Charged Attack DMG by 160~320% of Elemental Mastery. This effect will be removed after 12 Charged Attacks or 10s. Only 1 instance of Tireless Hunt can be gained every 12s.
Hunter's Path / Polar Star / Thundering Pulse / Skyward Harp: These weapons are stronger than Slingshot, however, Yelan does not utilize them optimally. If you have another character that benefits from these weapons, it's recommended to prioritize these weapons on them, since these weapons are very small upgrades over Slingshot. It is not recommended to pull these weapons for Yelan specifically.

8) Fading Twilight (ATK: 565 • Energy Recharge: 30.6%)

Has three states, Evengleam, Afterglow, and Dawnblaze, which increase DMG dealt by 6%/10%/14%~12%/20%/28% respectively. When attacks hit opponents, this weapon will switch to the next state. This weapon can change states once every 7s. The character equipping this weapon can still trigger the state switch while not on the field.

9) Recurve Bow (ATK: 354 • HP: 46.9%)

Defeating an opponent restores 8~16% HP.

Main & Sub Stats Priority

Artifact Main StatsArtifact Sub Stats
Sands - Energy Recharge / HP%
Goblet - Hydro DMG / HP%*
Circlet - Crit Rate / Crit DMG / HP%

Goblet: HP% Goblet is to be used only if the Hydro DMG% option has terrible substats and HP% option has great substats, or if Yelan has strong DMG% buffs such as Emblem of Severed Fate (4) + Mouun's Moon (especially with refinements) or Raiden + Kazuha and so on.
On top of that it's never recommended to run more than 2 HP% mainstat artifacts at a time.
Energy Recharge*
HP%
~= Crit Rate / DMG
Flat HP

Energy Recharge should be prioritized until requirements are met.
