Strengths and Weaknesses

Gray tends to be strong in high level Water Fiend Hunt because Fiends tend to have a lot of M/ATK above level 10.
[PvP] B-Rank Manager's shred allows him to reliably kill most units in the game.

Enemy M/ATK scaling costumes require dupes to scale well, and enemy stats in general PvE are typically scaled to prevent these costumes from cheesing content.

However, these downsides are mitigated by Gray's skill potentials, which significantly increase his frontloaded damage.

Costumes

Gray currently has 4 costumes. The Sharpshooter of the Mist scales off enemy ATK, while Vanguard scales off enemy MATK. B-Rank Manager is a DMG skill with 50% shred, and Pool Party gives Gray crit buffs.

This is Gray's base costume, which you obtain for free from completing Story Pack 3 — Mist Man. This costume is also available in Infinite Reroll.

Sharpshooter Gray's DoT effect scales off the enemy's ATK stat, meaning he deals extra damage against physical enemies. This can be a very powerful effect, however there are a couple caveats to this:

  • The DoT damage is heavily dupe dependent (125% at +0 vs 425% at +5). He needs +2 minimum for this damage to not just tickle.
  • The DoT damage is not great against enemies with low ATK stats. Ideally the enemy has at least 1000 ATK for the DoT to be significant, which tends to be late game enemies.
  • The DoT damage cannot be amplified by ATK buffers. However, units that apply the vulnerability debuff do work, especially from Game Club Rafina.

There are a lot of requirements for this costume to actually work well, but these caveats can be mitigated by his skill potentials, which significantly increase his frontloaded damage. These upgrades allow Gray to deal decent damage even under unfavorable conditions (for example, if you're using Gray as a DPS in Water Fiend Hunts).

This costume deals DoT damage to magic enemies. Besides that, everything noted about The Sharpshooter of the Mist applies to Vanguard as well.

Vanguard tends to be a great budget DPS for Water Fiend Hunts due to his Skip . If you're using him for Fiend Hunt, his skill potentials make him good even at +0.

This costume has great damage, and it has 50% DEF shred, allowing Gray to bypass high DEF enemies. However, his damage is scaled quite low at +0 (+2 is where his damage becomes decent).

This costume is pretty good in PvP for securing a kill when buffed (although it doesn't stop a DEF Granhildr). He will definitely want the cooldown reduction potential if you're using him in PvP. In other content, you may not need that cooldown reduction since Gray has plenty of costumes.

Key Upgrades: Design +3, Skill Potential 2 for PvP, DMG upgrades add up.

Costume Designs

This costume is pretty disappointing because the extra crit stats aren't very meaningful at high investments, and you already want good crit stats for Gray's other costumes, making the buff redundant. At best this is a filler costume when you're missing any of his other costumes for the full skill cycle.

However, this may change with the upcoming roguelite mode, where units start with no gear. So we should just wait and see.

Key Upgrades: Not worth upgrading at this point in time.

Gray has slightly different gear depending on whether he's being used for PvE or PvP content.

PvE Build

or

Optimal Substats (BBS Refinements) — 8 ATK% + 7 CDMG substats

Build DEF or MRES depending on what enemies you're facing. If you're using Gray to cheese high M/ATK enemies, you may want to prioritize CDMG over ATK.

PvP Build

or

Optimal Substats (BBS Refinements) — 2 ATK% + 9 CDMG + 4 CR substats

Build DEF or MRES depending on what you want Gray to potentially survive.
